Gaines, James R. Evening in the Palace of Reasoning: Bach Meets Frederick the Great in the Age of Enlightenment, 2005. Music history focused on J. S. Bach and Frederick the Great. Detail-oriented in a storytelling way. Not a light read, but interesting for musicians.

Whiteside, Abby. Abby Whiteside on Playing the Piano: Indispensables of Piano Playing, 1997.

Estes, Clarissa Pinkola. Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype, 1992. A challenging, thought-provoking read. Philosophy via stories that include a variety of religions.

Lopez, Steve. The Soloist: A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power of Music, 2008. A human-interest story about a journalist who befriends a homeless man with schizophrenia who is a musical genius. A page turner!

Hoffmann, Josef. Piano Playing: With Piano Questions Answered, 1976.

Tunstall, Tricia. Note by Note: A Celebration of the Piano Lesson, 2008. A brief memoir about her childhood piano lessons, her piano teachers and their influence, and her own experiences as a teacher.

Goldsby, Robin Meloy. Piano Girl: A Memoir, 2005. An entertaining comedic memoir about her life playing piano in nightclubs.

Ristad, Eloise. A Soprano on Her Head: Right-Side-Up Reflections on Life and Other Performances, 1982. Light and humorous discussions that present new insights on managing the problems of performance anxiety.

Levitin, Daniel. This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of Human Obsession, 2006. Research on how the brain processes music.
