"A Valentine to French Romanticism"—February 11 & 12

 

The duo of Laura Kargul (piano) and Robert Lantz (violin) will present a musical celebration of the Valentine season on February 11-12.

 

The February 11 performance will take place at Boothbay Opera House at 7:30 p.m. See the Boothbay Opera House website for ticket information.

 

The second performance will take place at Corthell Concert Hall at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham on Sunday, February 12 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission; $10 seniors, USM employees and alumni; and $5 students and children. The concerts include the great Sonata in A Major by César Franck, as well as several of the performers' own transcriptions of songs by Liszt and Faure. Also featured is the Maine premiere of the stunning Sonata for Violin and Piano by Jacques de la Presle, a contemporary of Debussy.

 

 

Kids, Kartoons, and Kotzschmar—February 12

 

This year's Kids, Kartoons and Kotzschmar concert will be more fun-filled than ever. The pre-concert activities begin at 1:15 p.m. They include a costume contest (dress as your favorite cartoon character) and a walking tour inside one of the most famous pipe organs in America.

The 2:00 p.m. concert features Rob Richards, Disney's house organist at the famed El Capitan Theatre, and Maine's own beloved illustrator Christina Siravo. The concert includes a tribute to the Girl Scouts of America. The Girl Scouts of Maine will host the post-concert refreshments.

 

Tickets are on sale now. Admission is free for kids age 12 and under, but a ticket is required.

 

 

Piano Monster Concert—March 10

 

A Piano Monster Concert will be held on March 10, 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m., at Minsky Recital Hall, University of Maine, Orono. (The snow date is March 11.) Students in Grades 4-12 are eligible. The event will be conducted by Ginger Yang Hwalek, who has led many piano monster concerts in New Hampshire and Vermont.

MTNA National Conference
—March 24–28

MTNA's 2012 National Conference will take place at the Hilton New York, located on the Avenue of the Americas. You won't want to miss headliners such as master class clinician Menahem Pressler. Participants will have the opportunity to network with colleagues from around the globe, experience sessions by internationally known pedagogues, and attend performances by accomplished artists. We've allowed plenty of free evenings to explore the city.

 

 

Young Composer’s Competition and Festival—April 14

 

The Young Composer’s Competition and Festival will be held on April 14 at Emlen Hall in Blue Hill. Judge will choose three winners in each category (under age 12 and ages 13-18). The young composers will have a wonderful opportunty to perform their compositions with parents and friends present.

MTNA Wellness Symposium—June 27-29

 

MTNA and the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations will host Empowering The Whole Musician—Mind and Body, at the Yamaha Artist Services Facility in New York City. This event will offer strategies to help attendees remain energized, injury-free and enthusiastic teachers and performers. Speakers will include Vanessa Cornett-Murtada, Julie Jaffee Nagel and Kathleen Riley.

 

 

National Group Piano & Piano Pedagogy Forum—August 3-4

 

The National Group Piano & Piano Pedagogy Forum will be held at the University of Texas campus in Austin. The event will concentrate on the needs of college and university teachers of group piano and piano pedagogy.
